Mission and Values
A Local Charity for Plymouth
Formerly called The Plymouth Almshouse and Assistance Charity, Municipal Charities of Plymouth is administered by a board of eight voluntary trustees. Day-to-day management is carried out by The Clerk/Treasurer to The Trustees. One Trustee and/or The Clerk visits Almsladies every month.
Our Values and Ethos
As a charity, we have a strong pastoral duty to vulnerable ladies and aim to ensure that they are happy and secure. To this end, we at Municipal Charities of Plymouth provide low-cost, self-contained housing in a safe environment for single and vulnerable ladies over the age of 60 with limited incomes or savings. Ideally, they should have naval connections and have been residents in the Plymouth area for some years. Originally aimed at helping naval widows, our ethos now includes ladies over 60, with a naval connection. Our 16 Almshouses are situated on Green Street, at The Rawlin Homes and John Gayer Homes. These Almshouses are within the Parish boundary of St Charles Church and St Matthias Church.
Our Duty to Those in Need
The Charity oversees the provision of Almshousing, ancillary care, and support for the benefit and wellbeing of residents to the highest standard possible. We seek to carry out the responsibilities with sensitivity, impartiality, and in accordance with the charitable purpose, placing the requirements of residents first and foremost. Additionally, we try to make sure that they are able to freely express any concerns they may have. Our Trustees are committed to fostering an atmosphere that encourages, retains, and motivates staff and volunteers in pursuit of the charity’s common goal of providing assistance for the vulnerable and those in need. The Board of Trustees, which consists of eight Trustees, meets every two months to address any issues or problems and any necessary actions.
