Helping Schoolchildren with Uniforms
We at Municipal Charities of Plymouth work for the relief and prevention of poverty in Plymouth. To help in the schooling of children from families with very low income, we manage a Uniforms Assistance fund, officially known as The Orphans Aid Educational Foundation Grant.
About the Orphans Aid Educational Foundation
The Orphans Aid Grant was historically set up back in the 1800s to aid parents who could not afford uniforms for their children to be able to attend school. A registered charity (charity number: 306770), The Orphans Aid Educational Foundation offers small grants of up to £75 per child for school uniforms for underprivileged pupils for the transition from Year 6 to Year 7. These funds are to be used only for a school uniform – not for shoes, sport shoes, bags, stationery, or travel expenses. Please note that Municipal Charities of Plymouth will not reimburse any request over £75, and we cannot pay you back without receipts. If you have previously been given a grant from The Charity, you will not be considered again. Once made, The Trustees’ decision is final.
How to Apply for Uniforms Assistance
To apply for Uniforms Assistance, you will need to complete an application form and return it to the Parent Support Advisor or Headteacher at your child’s school. This is for children going into Year 7. If your application is successful, you will be contacted by letter stating the amount you have been granted. You can take this letter to your child’s school to buy the uniform there. Alternatively, you can take the letter to The Uniform Shop in Plymouth city centre where you will be provided with a uniform up to the amount in your letter. This grant is available for ‘Looked After Children’ and carers who meet the criteria.
If you decide to buy the uniform yourself, you will need to send all receipts to The Clerk, together with a completed form (which you will receive with your original letter), including full bank details. We will then deposit the grant into your bank account by BACS.
